I’ve been feeling unwell lately and was recently diagnosed with gout. My family recently bought pineapples, but I’m unsure whether I can eat them. May I ask: Is it safe for people with gout to eat pineapple?

Gout patients can consume pineapple. Gout is a metabolic disorder caused by abnormal purine metabolism in the body. Dietary management—particularly attention to the acid-base properties of foods—is especially important. Patients with gout should primarily consume low-purine foods, limit moderate-purine foods, and strictly avoid high-purine animal-derived foods. Most fruits and vegetables are classified as alkaline-forming foods. The acid- or alkaline-forming nature of a food is not determined by its taste, but rather by the pH of the metabolic end-products generated after the food is oxidized and broken down in the body. The sour taste of fruits arises from organic acids such as malic acid and citric acid present within them. Pineapple contains abundant active metal cations, including potassium (K⁺) and sodium (Na⁺). Its organic acids are metabolized in the body to carbon dioxide (CO₂), which is subsequently exhaled via respiration. Thus, the acidic components are eliminated, while the alkaline cations (e.g., K⁺, Na⁺) remain and contribute to the body’s alkaline reserve.
