Can people with gout eat tofu?
Disease description:
Recently, I was diagnosed with gout during a hospital checkup. I’d like to eat some tofu—may I ask whether people with gout can consume tofu?
Patients with gout may consume tofu in moderation. Tofu and other soy products can promote uric acid excretion; moreover, during processing, a portion of the purines in soy products is converted, so they do not increase uric acid levels and are safe to eat. Current dietary guidance for gout emphasizes that, aside from foods extremely high in purines, all other foods—including acidic foods—can be consumed normally, provided portion sizes are appropriately controlled. Such foods do not interfere with uric acid excretion or metabolism and are therefore safe for gout patients.
