How many days is the contagious period of hand, foot, and mouth disease?
Disease description:
My son is six years old this year. Over the past few days, blisters have appeared on his hands. After examination, he was diagnosed with hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD). I would like to know: How long is the infectious period for HFMD?
The contagious period of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) typically lasts about two weeks. Humans are the sole host for human enteroviruses, and both symptomatic patients and asymptomatic carriers serve as sources of infection. The common incubation period is 3–5 days, with a minimum of 2 days and a maximum of up to 14 days. Infectivity is usually strongest during the first week after symptom onset. Enteroviruses transmit via multiple routes, including respiratory droplets, coughing, and sneezing. Upon diagnosis, it is recommended that family members implement isolation measures while caring for the patient to prevent further transmission.
