A few days ago, numerous smooth, small papules appeared on the back of my hand, accompanied by itching. I visited the outpatient clinic, and the physician diagnosed them as flat warts. Why do flat warts cause itching?

The inflammatory response associated with flat warts themselves can cause localized pruritus (itching). Flat warts may develop at sites of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. When flat warts occur, the skin may exhibit characteristic wart-like lesions. Moreover, these lesions are inherently flat and granular in appearance. However, due to individual variability, flat warts may cause varying degrees of pruritus during the inflammatory phase.
