How to Prevent Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease: Preventive Measures
Disease description:
My child is four years old. A neighbor’s child was recently diagnosed with hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD). I would like to know how HFMD can be prevented and what preventive measures can be taken.
Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is a contagious illness; children and asymptomatic carriers are the primary sources of infection. The main transmission route is close contact—objects such as hands, personal hygiene items, clothing, toys, food, and bedding contaminated with the virus can all lead to HFMD infection. Prevention begins with eliminating the source of infection: closely monitor individuals suspected of having HFMD, and immediately isolate and treat confirmed cases to prevent cross-infection. As HFMD is an enteric infectious disease, maintaining good personal hygiene is essential—change children’s clothes frequently and disinfect toys promptly. A light, bland diet is recommended for daily meals; avoid spicy or irritating foods.
