How to effectively treat balanoposthitis
Disease description:
Recently, my uncle experienced redness, swelling, and pain in the glans penis. After visiting the hospital for evaluation, the doctor diagnosed him with balanoposthitis. How is balanoposthitis best treated?
Balanoposthitis is typically managed with pharmacological therapy and, if necessary, surgical intervention. Initial treatment often involves antiseptic agents such as potassium permanganate or povidone-iodine to reduce inflammation and eliminate infection. Subsequently, maintaining local dryness is essential. Topical antibacterial and anti-inflammatory ointments—such as erythromycin ointment or mupirocin ointment—may be applied. Oral antibiotics—including cefoxitin, metronidazole, or aspirin—may also be prescribed. In cases where balanoposthitis results from phimosis or redundant prepuce, circumcision may be indicated as definitive treatment.
