Is itchy skin a sign of liver problems?
Disease description:
I felt unwell recently and went for a medical examination, which revealed a liver problem. Over the past two days, I’ve been experiencing persistent itching of the skin. I suspect this may be related to my liver condition. Could this kind of skin itching be caused by liver disease?
Skin itching is not necessarily indicative of liver problems; however, certain liver diseases—such as cholelithiasis (gallstones), hepatobiliary tumors, and end-stage cirrhosis—can also cause pruritus. In these conditions, bile flow becomes obstructed, leading to bile accumulation in the bloodstream; when bile components circulate to the skin, they may trigger itching. Alternatively, pruritus may stem from primary dermatological conditions—for example, eczema, urticaria, or allergic dermatitis. We recommend promptly consulting a healthcare provider for thorough evaluation to identify the underlying cause and initiate appropriate, etiology-directed treatment.
