How to Differentiate Tonsil Stones from Tonsil Cancer
Disease description:
My sister has recently been complaining of throat discomfort. I noticed small, grain-like objects on her tonsils and am unsure whether they are tonsil stones or tonsil cancer. Could you please explain how to distinguish between tonsil stones and tonsil cancer?
Tonsil stones (tonsilloliths) form from the accumulation of bacteria and desquamated epithelial cells within the tonsils. Most commonly, they develop in the crypts of the tonsils and may present with symptoms such as dysphagia (difficulty swallowing), halitosis (bad breath), and expectoration of small, foul-smelling particles. Some patients may also experience pharyngeal discomfort or referred pain. In contrast, tonsil cancer refers to malignant transformation of the tonsillar mucosal tissue and typically manifests with symptoms including a persistent sensation of a foreign body in the throat, dysphagia, and respiratory difficulty. As the clinical presentations of these two conditions differ significantly, they can be distinguished based on symptomatology and confirmed through comprehensive diagnostic evaluation.
