Muscle spasm and twitching refer to a sudden, transient inability to move caused by prolonged muscle tension, stimulation, or contraction—either localized or generalized. If not attributable to an underlying disease, symptoms typically resolve spontaneously after a short period. Spasms and twitching may result from sustained contraction or tension of skeletal or smooth muscle. They can also arise from stimulation of the central nervous system—for example, sudden exposure to cold may trigger such spasms.
