Dr. Xie Zixing
Passing black stools after taking iron supplements is a normal drug reaction, caused by the oxidation of iron in the intestines. The black coloration will naturally resolve once iron supplementation is discontinued. It is recommended that patients take iron supplements orally between meals, as this can reduce gastrointestinal side effects and enhance absorption. Taking vitamin C concurrently can also help promote iron absorption.
