Can people with lumbar disc herniation ride bicycles?
Disease description:
I quite enjoy riding a bicycle, but during a recent physical examination, I was diagnosed with mild lumbar disc herniation. I'd like to ask—can I still ride a bicycle with this condition?
No. This condition is generally associated with factors such as prolonged standing, trauma, or excessive physical activity. Riding a bicycle may cause secondary injury to the affected area. First, when cycling, the spine in the back assumes a curved, arched position—bending backward. This increases pressure on the nerve roots from the herniated disc, potentially worsening the condition. Additionally, sitting on the saddle for extended periods increases the load on the lumbar spine, which can further aggravate symptoms.
