Is Tourette syndrome hereditary?
Disease description:
Recently, my baby has been experiencing frequent body twitching. The doctor mentioned it might be tic disorder. Is tic disorder hereditary?
The etiology of childhood tic disorders is largely dependent on genetic factors, meaning that tics in children show a high degree of familial clustering. Whether a child inherits tics and the probability of inheritance depend on whether the child's tics are caused by congenital or acquired factors, such as genetic and hereditary influences. For example, the health status of the child during pregnancy—particularly the mother's psychological condition and medication use—and whether the child experienced birth complications such as dystocia, premature birth, cranial hemorrhage, or oxygen deprivation due to cesarean section, are all considered congenital factors. Postnatal factors, including environmental influences, infections, psychological aspects, and social and family circumstances, do not have a particularly significant relative genetic probability.
