An overly sweet taste in the mouth may be caused by certain medical conditions. Sweet taste in the mouth, also known as "sweet mouth" or "oral sweetness," refers to a condition where even drinking plain water gives a sweet sensation. This symptom commonly occurs in patients with damp-heat in the spleen and stomach, liver-spleen disharmony due to stagnation, or internal accumulation of phlegm-fire. In traditional Chinese medicine, this is historically termed "spleen heat with sweet taste." It may also be related to dysfunction of the spleen and stomach, usually due to spleen and stomach deficiency, and is closely associated with an individual's daily diet and lifestyle habits.
