What does gastric ptosis refer to?

Gastroptosis refers to the gradual downward displacement of the stomach from its normal upper position. In severe cases, the stomach descends below the anterior intestines, reaching as low as the pelvic cavity. Gastroptosis commonly occurs in individuals with slender body types. Patients with gastroptosis may be asymptomatic. However, weakened diaphragmatic support, loose ligaments that support the internal organs, or decreased intra-abdominal pressure can cause the stomach to descend into the pelvis.
