Disease description:

My best friend's baby has had high jaundice since birth, which recently subsided. She is very worried it might recur. Can newborn jaundice come back after it has gone away?

Neonatal jaundice may not necessarily recur once it has resolved; whether it recurs depends on the underlying cause of the jaundice. If it is physiological jaundice, recurrence usually does not occur. However, if the jaundice is caused by pathological factors such as congenital genetic metabolic disorders, polycythemia, hemolytic disease of the newborn, or neonatal infections, it may reappear after resolution.
