Hyponatremia refers to a serum sodium level below 135 mmol/L. In healthy individuals, the normal concentration of sodium ions in serum ranges between 135 and 145 mmol/L.
Hyponatremia can be further classified into mild, moderate, and severe forms. Mild hyponatremia is defined by a serum sodium level between 130–135 mmol/L, moderate hyponatremia between 121–129 mmol/L, and severe hyponatremia as a serum sodium level less than or equal to 120 mmol/L.
