The survival time of patients with cirrhosis is influenced by multiple factors, including the underlying cause of cirrhosis, disease severity, the patient's overall health status, the presence of complications, and the treatments received. Cirrhosis is classified as either compensated or decompensated: in compensated cirrhosis, liver function is still sufficient to meet daily physiological demands, whereas decompensated cirrhosis is characterized by evident liver failure and complications. With timely and effective treatment—such as abstinence from alcohol, antiviral therapy, and management of complications—the survival period can be significantly prolonged and quality of life improved. However, the development of severe complications such as hepatocellular carcinoma, variceal bleeding, hepatic encephalopathy, or renal failure may shorten life expectancy. Liver transplantation is an effective treatment for end-stage liver disease and can markedly improve survival rates in eligible patients. Therefore, life expectancy for patients with cirrhosis varies widely and largely depends on early diagnosis, active treatment, and effective disease management.
