What Happens If You Take Contraceptive Pills While Pregnant?
Disease description:
My menstrual period has been significantly delayed, and I’ve confirmed that I’m pregnant. However, a few days ago—before I knew I was pregnant—I took contraceptive pills. I’m now extremely worried that this may affect my baby’s development. Could you please explain what happens if someone takes contraceptive pills during pregnancy?
Hello,
After discovering pregnancy, most women avoid using medications indiscriminately. However, in cases of unintended pregnancy, if oral contraceptives are taken during early pregnancy—specifically after fertilization (i.e., after sperm and egg have combined) and implantation of the blastocyst—pregnancy is often not recognized until after a missed menstrual period. At this point, medication use falls within what medicine refers to as the “all-or-none” period. In simpler terms, during the first two weeks following fertilization, external factors (such as medications) either cause lethal damage—resulting in very early miscarriage and failure to sustain the pregnancy—or produce no discernible effect at all.
We hope the above information is helpful to you. Wishing you a happy and healthy life!
