Will paronychia heal on its own?
Disease description:
My boyfriend has paronychia. I asked him to go to the hospital for treatment, but he always says it's fine and that it will get better on its own. I would like to ask, can paronychia resolve by itself?
Whether paronychia can heal on its own depends on multiple factors. Mild inflammation and good personal hygiene are important contributors to self-resolution. If the inflammation is mild and the patient maintains proper hygiene—such as regularly cleaning the affected area and preventing bacterial infection—paronychia may resolve spontaneously. Patients with stronger immune systems are also more likely to recover without treatment. However, if the inflammation is severe or the patient has underlying medical conditions such as diabetes, the likelihood of self-healing decreases. In addition, timely intervention plays a crucial role in whether paronychia resolves on its own. Therefore, patients with mild symptoms may try self-care while closely monitoring their condition; however, those with severe or worsening symptoms should seek prompt medical attention and professional treatment.
