Whether the jaundice value is normal mainly depends on the level of bilirubin, and the normal range varies according to the population and the type of bilirubin. 1. For adults, the reference range for normal jaundice values is total bilirubin below 17.1 μmol/L, direct bilirubin below 7.32 μmol/L, and indirect bilirubin below 13.68 μmol/L. These values indicate bilirubin levels in the blood are within the normal range and generally do not cause symptoms of jaundice. 2. For newborns, the jaundice value needs to be assessed according to their gestational age and whether they are full-term or not. At birth, the normal jaundice index for newborns is 3 mg/dL. At four days after birth, it can reach 10–12 mg/dL, but it is still considered normal as long as it does not exceed 15 mg/dL. This is because the bilirubin metabolism system in newborns has not yet fully matured, resulting in relatively higher bilirubin levels.
