Disease description:

Today, I went to the hospital early in the morning to collect my test results and noticed that my carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) level was quite low. Therefore, I would like to ask: Is a lower CEA level always better?

Hello, Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) levels are not necessarily better when lower. Tumor markers may be abnormally secreted in the presence of tumors; however, these markers—including various proteins—are normally present in the human body within a defined reference range, and values are not “better” simply because they are lower. Additionally, other non-malignant conditions can also cause elevations in tumor marker levels. Therefore, clinical diagnosis should never rely solely on changes in tumor marker levels. We recommend that patients undergo comprehensive diagnostic evaluations for accurate, integrated assessment. We hope the above information is helpful to you. Wishing you good health and happiness!
