Disease description:

I had herpes zoster a while ago and went to the hospital to get oral medication and topical ointment. After using them for over a week, there is still some itching. I would like to ask if itching during the later stage of herpes zoster is normal?

Dr. Liu Wenmin

Itching in the later stages of herpes zoster is a normal phenomenon.

This is mainly due to nerve damage caused by the varicella-zoster virus, especially the destruction of the nerve myelin sheath, which makes the skin receptors abnormally sensitive. In the later stages of herpes zoster, although the local skin lesions may have healed, the impact of the virus on the nerves may persist, causing abnormal sensations such as itching, burning, and pain. These sensory abnormalities are part of the nerve repair process and usually subside as the nerve myelin sheath gradually heals.

For the management of itching in the later stages of herpes zoster, patients should avoid scratching the affected area to prevent skin damage, infection, or scarring. Under a doctor's guidance, antiviral medications, nerve-nourishing drugs, and topical anti-itch creams may be used to promote nerve repair and alleviate symptoms. If symptoms are severe and affect quality of life, prompt medical attention is recommended.
