Dr. He Haochen

An enlarged spleen, medically referred to as splenomegaly, is treated according to its underlying cause. The following are common approaches used in managing splenomegaly:

1. Etiologic treatment: Identifying and treating the underlying cause of the enlarged spleen. If it is caused by a viral infection, antiviral medications may be required; if due to cirrhosis, treatment targeting the liver disease may be necessary.

2. Medication therapy: In certain situations, doctors may prescribe medications to control the condition, such as antibiotics for treating infections or immunosuppressive agents and chemotherapeutic drugs for treating blood disorders.

3. Surgical treatment: If the spleen becomes overactive, causing reductions in red blood cells, white blood cells, or platelets (hypersplenism), or if there is a tumor within the spleen, surgical removal of the spleen (splenectomy) may be required. This is a common treatment approach, although surgery is not necessary for all patients with an enlarged spleen.
