Can a complete blood count (CBC) detect pregnancy?
Disease description:
My period is several days late, and it hasn't started yet. I'm worried I might be pregnant. Can a complete blood count (CBC) detect pregnancy?
A complete blood count (CBC) test cannot be directly used to detect pregnancy. A CBC primarily assesses a person's health status, including whether anemia, infection, or hematologic diseases are present, by analyzing the quantity and morphology of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets in the blood. In contrast, confirmation of pregnancy typically relies on detecting changes in specific hormones within a woman's body, particularly the level of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). This hormone is produced by the placenta after the fertilized egg implants and gradually increases in the blood as pregnancy progresses. It can be accurately detected using specialized pregnancy test strips, serum hCG tests, or urine hCG tests. Therefore, to confirm whether you are pregnant, you should consult a doctor and choose an appropriate testing method rather than relying on a complete blood count.
