Can you eat ice cream when you have a fever?
Disease description:
My child has had a low-grade fever since this morning, although it wasn't very serious. At noon, he had an ice cream, and in the afternoon his fever suddenly spiked. I would like to ask, is it okay to eat ice cream when having a fever?
Fever generally refers to an elevated body temperature. Whether or not one can eat ice cream depends on the cause of the fever. If the fever is caused by a heat-type cold or heatstroke, a small amount of ice cream may be consumed. However, if the fever is due to a cold-type cold or summerheat-dampness infection, eating ice cream is not recommended.
1. **Heat-type cold**: For fevers caused by a heat-type cold, if body temperature is around 38.5°C, a small amount of ice cream may be consumed appropriately, as it may help lower body temperature. However, excessive consumption should be avoided to prevent symptoms such as high fever, chills, or even convulsions.
2. **Heatstroke**: Severe heatstroke can also cause fever, and in such cases, eating ice cream may help reduce fever. However, excessive consumption should also be avoided.
3. **Cold-type cold**: Cold foods, including ice cream, should not be consumed for cold-type colds. Ice cream is too cold in nature and consuming it may cause cold pathogens to accumulate in the body, worsening the condition and prolonging recovery time.
4. **Summerheat-dampness infection**: Patients with summerheat-dampness infection may experience symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fever. Ice cream should not be consumed in this case as its cold nature may exacerbate symptoms and lead to osmotic diarrhea.
