Can people with gastric ulcers drink red wine?
I am a patient with gastric ulcer. I usually enjoy drinking red wine. May I ask if people with gastric ulcers can drink red wine?
For individuals with gastric ulcers, consuming alcohol, including red wine, should be done with caution. Patients with gastric ulcers are not advised to drink red wine. Although red wine contains certain components beneficial to the human body, it also contains alcohol. Ethanol in alcohol can irritate the gastric mucosa, potentially causing discomfort such as stomach pain, acid reflux, heartburn, and belching, thereby worsening the condition.
Alcohol is an irritant that can directly stimulate the gastric mucosa and increase gastric acid secretion, which may exacerbate symptoms of gastric ulcers and even lead to severe complications such as bleeding and perforation. Additionally, alcohol may interfere with the effectiveness of certain medications used to treat gastric ulcers. Regardless of the severity of their condition, patients with gastric ulcers should avoid other irritant beverages such as white spirits, beer, carbonated drinks, strong tea, coffee, and similar drinks to prevent further irritation to the gastric mucosa.
Therefore, it is recommended that patients with gastric ulcers avoid all alcoholic beverages, including red wine, until their condition is fully recovered. At the same time, maintaining good dietary habits and a healthy lifestyle is also important.
