Can people with high blood sugar consume maltose-containing foods?
Recently, I have been craving maltose. May I ask if people with high blood sugar can consume maltose-containing foods?
Patients with high blood sugar are not advised to consume foods containing maltose. Maltose, a high-sugar food, has a high sugar content and can be rapidly converted into glucose, leading to elevated blood sugar levels.
Maltose is a disaccharide composed of two glucose molecules. It has a high glycemic index (GI), and consuming maltose-containing foods can quickly raise blood sugar levels, making blood sugar control more difficult. For individuals with high blood sugar or diabetes, this can cause blood glucose fluctuations and is detrimental to stable glycemic control.
Maltose-containing foods are also high in calories and carbohydrates. Long-term excessive intake may lead to weight gain, thereby exacerbating insulin resistance and negatively affecting blood sugar control.
Patients should try to avoid or limit the consumption of high-GI foods in their daily diet and choose low-GI foods such as whole grains, legumes, nuts, and most vegetables and fruits, which help maintain stable blood sugar levels.
Individuals with high blood sugar should choose low-sugar, high-fiber foods and maintain a balanced and diverse diet to better control their blood glucose levels.
