Can I drink milk on an empty stomach?
I really enjoy drinking milk and have recently been considering having milk for breakfast. I would like to ask, is it okay to drink milk on an empty stomach?
Drinking milk on an empty stomach is generally not recommended. When the stomach is empty, milk may be directly metabolized as carbohydrates, mainly providing energy, while many nutrients such as proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals may not be fully absorbed. Additionally, drinking milk on an empty stomach may dilute gastric juices, accelerate gastric motility, and thereby cause gastrointestinal discomfort such as diarrhea and abdominal pain. Moreover, if lactose in milk cannot be promptly digested in the small intestine, it may reach the large intestine, where it is broken down by bacteria into large amounts of gas and acid, further stimulating the intestines and worsening gastrointestinal discomfort. Individuals with lactose intolerance may experience exacerbated symptoms such as bloating and diarrhea when drinking milk on an empty stomach.
Although milk is rich in nutrients, excessive consumption may also cause physical discomfort, so moderate intake is important. To avoid discomfort caused by drinking milk on an empty stomach, it is recommended to consume some other foods, such as grain-based products or fruits, before or together with milk, to reduce irritation to the gastrointestinal tract and promote the absorption of nutrients in milk.
