If laboratory testing confirms a fungal infection, antifungal treatment is typically required—for example, oral terbinafine. However, if the condition is not fungal in origin—for instance, if it is seborrheic dermatitis or pityriasis capitis (dandruff)—appropriate topical treatments are usually recommended, such as coal tar shampoo for external use, possibly combined with oral antihistamines.
