What should I do if my cornea is damaged?
Disease description:
A friend was recently diagnosed with a corneal abrasion. What should be done if the cornea is scratched?
Corneal abrasions require prompt evaluation at a reputable hospital’s ophthalmology department. Patients should actively cooperate with their physicians, who will use a slit-lamp microscope to assess the extent and severity of the corneal injury. Minor abrasions typically do not require specific treatment and usually improve gradually as the cornea heals spontaneously. In contrast, lacerations or ruptures of the cornea may be repaired surgically via suturing.
