Can you get pregnant while using a condom?
Disease description:
I found out from chatting with a colleague that his wife is pregnant—and it’s an unintended pregnancy. They’re still debating whether to keep the baby, as they already have one child at home. My colleague is particularly frustrated because they used condoms, yet she still got pregnant. Can pregnancy occur even when using condoms?
Under normal circumstances, using a condom correctly prevents pregnancy. However, pregnancy may occur if the condom is used incorrectly, breaks, or slips off during intercourse—though such incidents are relatively rare and have a low probability of occurrence. When used correctly, condoms are approximately 95–98% effective at preventing pregnancy; thus, there remains a small chance of pregnancy.
