What does a cardiac enzyme test assess?
Disease description:
I’ve been experiencing persistent chest pain and general discomfort lately. During my hospital visit, one of the tests ordered was a cardiac enzyme test. Could you please explain what this test is used for?
Hello,
Clinically, cardiac enzymes are primarily located within cardiomyocytes. When myocardial ischemia or injury occurs, these enzymes are released into the bloodstream, leading to elevated serum levels. Thus, cardiac enzyme levels serve as an indicator of the extent of myocardial damage.
Given your symptom of chest pain, angina pectoris or myocardial infarction—and other cardiac conditions—must be ruled out initially. Since the degree of myocardial injury correlates with both severity and duration, prompt blood testing for cardiac enzymes and other relevant diagnostic evaluations is essential upon onset of chest pain to exclude acute myocardial infarction. Once a definitive diagnosis is established, appropriate management can be initiated.
I hope this information is helpful. Wishing you good health!
