Symptoms of Vitamin B1 Deficiency
Disease description:
Lately, I’ve constantly felt weak all over and had poor appetite. After visiting the hospital for a checkup, I was diagnosed with vitamin B1 (thiamine) deficiency. What are the symptoms of vitamin B1 deficiency?
Vitamin B1 deficiency, also known as beriberi, is one of the common nutritional deficiency disorders. When neurological manifestations predominate, it is termed “dry beriberi”; when heart failure symptoms predominate, it is termed “wet beriberi.” Dry beriberi presents as ascending, symmetrical peripheral neuritis, with sensory and motor disturbances, decreased muscle strength, and, in some cases, foot drop and toe drop, resulting in a steppage gait during walking. Wet beriberi manifests as weakness, fatigue, palpitations, and dyspnea.
