I’ve recently been taking orlistat for weight loss, but ever since I started this medication, my stool has appeared black-edged and oily. What causes black, oily stools while taking orlistat?

This medication is primarily used for weight loss. During treatment, you may notice fat droplets in your stool—commonly referred to as “oily stools.” Black stool may indicate the expulsion of old, retained fecal matter from the intestines. However, if black stool persists, you should consult a gastroenterologist to rule out upper gastrointestinal bleeding, which commonly presents with black, tarry stools (melena). Additionally, consuming large amounts of green leafy vegetables or animal blood products can also cause dark-colored stool.
