Formula for Calculating Bilirubin Levels

Jaundice values are primarily calculated based on bilirubin level assessment and are typically expressed in two units: mg/dL and μmol/L. A clear conversion relationship exists between these units: 1 mg/dL of bilirubin equals 17.1 μmol/L. When clinicians or laboratories report jaundice values, the unit used must be explicitly stated, as interpretation criteria and clinical decision-making thresholds differ depending on the unit employed. In evaluating jaundice values, clinicians also consider whether the bilirubin level exceeds the normal reference range. In newborns, physiological jaundice is common; thus, bilirubin levels within a specific range are considered normal. However, if bilirubin levels exceed defined thresholds, further diagnostic evaluation may be required to determine whether the jaundice is pathological, and appropriate therapeutic interventions should be initiated accordingly.
