Ascites caused by liver cirrhosis indeed leads to abdominal distension. In advanced cirrhosis, severe impairment of liver function results in portal hypertension, impeding venous return and causing fluid accumulation within the peritoneal cavity—termed ascites. This ascites not only causes visible abdominal enlargement but also increases intra-abdominal pressure, leading to tautness of the abdominal wall and a pronounced sensation of abdominal fullness or distension. Additionally, ascites may disrupt gastrointestinal function, resulting in early satiety after meals and decreased appetite. These symptoms not only cause physical discomfort but may also impair normal ambulation and respiration. Timely treatment and appropriate nursing care are therefore critical for patients with cirrhotic ascites.
