My mother developed numerous melasma patches during menopause, causing her great distress. How is melasma during menopause treated?
Melasma During Menopause
The treatment strategy for melasma includes avoiding triggering factors, emphasizing sun protection, maintaining skin hydration, restoring skin barrier function, appropriately using topical medications, and combining systemic medications, laser therapy, and traditional Chinese medicine as needed. The older the patient and the longer the disease duration, the more challenging the treatment becomes; therefore, early intervention is strongly recommended. First-line oral therapies include vitamin C, vitamin E, and tranexamic acid—all of which are effective for melasma. Additionally, minimizing ultraviolet (UV) exposure is essential. In some cases, melasma may spontaneously fade approximately 3–5 years after menopause. According to the clinical guidelines for melasma management, even simple pharmacological regimens can yield satisfactory therapeutic outcomes.
