Treatment Options for Carotid Artery Stenosis and Plaque
Disease description:
Recently, I underwent a physical examination at the hospital and was found to have carotid artery stenosis with plaque formation. What are the treatment options for carotid artery stenosis and plaque?
Minimally invasive interventional therapy involves placing a stent at the site of arterial stenosis to reopen the carotid artery. Carotid endarterectomy (surgical removal of plaque) may be technically challenging; if plaque or other debris dislodges and travels to the brain, it can cause cerebral vascular occlusion. Therefore, preventive measures in daily life are especially important. Carotid artery stenosis and associated plaque formation impair cerebral blood supply, potentially leading to cerebral hypoperfusion; this condition is generally unrelated to respiratory difficulties. It is unlikely to be caused by tracheal foreign bodies.
