What Is the Difference Between the Thyroid and Lymph Nodes?
Disease description:
I stayed up late, which caused internal heat buildup, resulting in a swelling in my neck. Some people say it’s the thyroid gland, while others think it’s a lymph node. What is the difference between the thyroid gland and lymph nodes?
There is a fundamental difference: lymphatic tissue is present throughout the body—every region contains lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes—whereas the thyroid gland is located exclusively below the thyroid cartilage, on both sides of the trachea. If lymph nodes adjacent to the thyroid become inflamed and enlarged, surgical treatment requires removal of both the thyroid gland and the surrounding involved lymph nodes to achieve effective therapy.
