How long can patients with systemic lupus erythematosus live?
Disease description:
I heard that a friend was diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). This condition appears to affect life expectancy—how long can someone with SLE expect to live?
The post-diagnosis survival time for patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is variable and depends on multiple factors, including disease severity, treatment response, and the patient’s overall physical condition. Patients with mild disease who receive timely and effective treatment typically experience no reduction in life expectancy. In contrast, patients with severe disease—particularly those who develop lupus nephritis—may survive 10 to 20 years or longer with corticosteroid-based therapy.
