Specific drugs include acyclovir, ganciclovir, and sodium phosphonoformate. Herpes virus-associated encephalitis is often accompanied by severe immune-mediated inflammation. Thus, during the acute phase of illness, low-dose corticosteroids are commonly used to help control inflammation; intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy may also be required when necessary.
