Introduction
Povidone-iodine has no effect on flat warts caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. The primary treatment for flat warts involves antiviral agents, such as recombinant human interferon α2B gel, or topical medications that promote normal epidermal metabolism and inhibit epidermal proliferation—e.g., tretinoin cream. Additionally, topical imiquimod cream may be used, which modulates local skin immunity and aids in viral clearance.

Some individuals neglect proper skin hygiene in their daily lives, and combined with high levels of stress from work and life, this can lead to various skin conditions—such as flat warts. So, can povidone-iodine (iodophor) be used to treat flat warts?

Can Povidone-Iodine Treat Flat Warts?

Povidone-iodine has no therapeutic effect against flat warts caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. The primary treatment for flat warts involves antiviral medications—for example, recombinant human interferon α2B gel—or topical agents that promote normal epidermal metabolism and inhibit epidermal proliferation, such as tretinoin cream. Additionally, imiquimod cream may be applied topically; it modulates local cutaneous immunity and aids in viral clearance. If topical treatments prove ineffective, laser therapy or cryotherapy (freezing) may be considered—both offer rapid and visible results.

If a patient develops flat warts, treatment options include topical ointments, laser therapy, cryotherapy, or microwave therapy. Flat warts commonly occur on exposed areas such as the face and hands; in some cases, they may also appear on the trunk. Initially, they present as tiny, millet-sized lesions; over time, some may enlarge and coalesce into plaques. Trauma—such as scratching—can trigger a Koebner phenomenon, resulting in new wart lesions at the site of injury. Patients are strongly advised against scratching and should instead seek professional care at a reputable medical facility.

Patients are advised to maintain good skin hygiene in daily life—frequent handwashing and bathing—and cultivate healthy lifestyle habits. We hope this information is helpful to you.
