What to Do If You Feel Nauseous and Unwell During Pregnancy
Every woman may experience a unique phase during pregnancy—early pregnancy—when the most challenging aspect is morning sickness. Many women experience symptoms during the first trimester, including nausea and an inability to eat. So, what can be done when nausea and discomfort occur during pregnancy?
What to Do When Experiencing Nausea and Discomfort During Pregnancy
Nausea and discomfort during pregnancy are manifestations of “morning sickness,” a common physiological response. It is recommended that pregnant women take a prenatal multivitamin supplement to help reduce nausea and vomiting. Additionally, if vomiting is severe, laboratory tests—including urinalysis, serum electrolytes, liver function tests, and renal function tests—should be performed. If urine ketones are positive and electrolyte imbalances are present, intravenous fluid replacement therapy should be initiated in the hospital setting. This may include potassium chloride and vitamin C supplementation, along with intramuscular administration of vitamin B1 (thiamine). Antiemetic medications may also be prescribed; options include vitamin B6 alone or a combination preparation of vitamin B6 and doxylamine. In cases of metabolic acidosis, sodium bicarbonate may be administered for correction. For patients with malnutrition, treatment with amino acid solutions and fat emulsions may be indicated.

Nausea during pregnancy is typically a physiological phenomenon. Following conception, increased hormonal secretion—particularly human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and estrogen—stimulates heightened gastric acid production, leading to acid reflux and nausea. Symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite commonly appear around day 40 of gestation and usually resolve spontaneously by the end of the first trimester (i.e., around 12 weeks). However, some women—due to individual variations in physical constitution or endocrine profiles—may not experience nausea or vomiting at all.

Patients are advised to maintain a light, easily digestible diet and seek prompt medical evaluation and treatment upon noticing any discomfort, to prevent symptom progression or complications. We hope this information is helpful to you.
