Introduction
Generally, painless, ultrasound-guided abortion is the safest option for pregnancies implanted in a cesarean scar. Such scar pregnancies are dangerous primarily because the fertilized egg implants directly onto the scar tissue. As the fetus grows, uterine rupture may occur. Ultrasound-guided, painless abortion can be used for termination of pregnancy; it allows precise localization of the implantation site, minimizes trauma to the uterus and scar tissue, and effectively removes the gestational sac to achieve pregnancy termination.

Cesarean scar pregnancy (CSP) refers to a condition in which the fertilized egg implants within the scar tissue from a previous cesarean delivery. Due to the reduced elasticity of the scarred tissue, as the embryo develops, it poses a significant threat to the mother’s life. So, how is termination performed for a cesarean scar pregnancy?

How Is Termination Performed for Cesarean Scar Pregnancy?

Generally, painless, ultrasound-guided (or hysteroscopy-guided) vacuum aspiration is considered the safest option for terminating a cesarean scar pregnancy. CSP is inherently dangerous primarily because the embryo implants directly onto the cesarean scar. As the gestational sac enlarges, there is an increased risk of uterine rupture. Ultrasound- or hysteroscopy-guided vacuum aspiration allows precise localization of the implanted gestational sac, thereby minimizing trauma to the uterus and scar tissue while effectively removing the pregnancy tissue to achieve termination.

Postoperatively, some discharge may occur at the surgical site. Patients are advised to gently cleanse the area daily with warm water to maintain local hygiene and prevent infection. Adequate rest is essential—patients should remain on bed rest for approximately two weeks. During this period, strenuous physical activity must be avoided to prevent wound dehiscence and to support optimal post-procedural recovery. Nutritional supplementation is also crucial. Patients are encouraged to consume nutrient-dense foods such as chicken, eggs, milk, legumes, and lean meats, which not only enhance overall nutrition but also aid in systemic recovery. Additionally, foods rich in vitamins—particularly vitamin C and vitamin E—can promote healing of the affected tissues.

Cesarean scar pregnancy is an abnormal form of ectopic pregnancy. Once diagnosed, prompt termination is imperative. Delayed management may severely compromise a woman’s health—and even endanger her life. We hope this information has been helpful. Wishing you good health and happiness!
