Introduction
Postoperative intestinal adhesions following appendectomy can be alleviated through measures such as abdominal heat application and massage. Heat therapy exerts a certain therapeutic effect on intestinal adhesions after appendectomy; appropriate heat application can reduce pain caused by adhesions and alleviate intestinal edema. However, once intestinal adhesions develop, patients may experience varying degrees and types of abdominal pain, and heat application is effective only for general abdominal discomfort.

Once appendicitis occurs, patients experience severe, intolerable abdominal pain and typically require prompt hospitalization for surgical intervention. Following surgery, patients often feel physically weakened, making postoperative care essential. So, what should be done if intestinal adhesions develop after appendectomy?

Management of Intestinal Adhesions After Appendectomy

Intestinal adhesions following appendectomy can be alleviated through methods such as abdominal heat application and gentle massage. Heat therapy offers certain therapeutic benefits for post-appendectomy adhesions: appropriate heat application may help reduce pain and intestinal edema caused by adhesions. However, pain symptoms vary among patients after adhesion formation. While heat therapy may effectively relieve mild to moderate abdominal discomfort, it is not recommended for severe abdominal pain—particularly when intestinal obstruction is suspected—as inappropriate heat application could potentially worsen the condition.

If intestinal adhesions are mild but cause intermittent pain, abdominal massage may provide symptomatic relief. When performing massage, apply moderate pressure—not too forceful, yet not overly light—to achieve optimal effect. In contrast, severe adhesions (e.g., dense fibrous bands) may compress or even twist the bowel, leading to signs and symptoms of intestinal obstruction. In such cases, immediate hospital referral is necessary for gastrointestinal decompression to alleviate these complications.

In daily life, patients should maintain a positive mindset, actively cooperate with their physicians’ treatment plans, take prescribed medications on time and in correct dosages, and adhere to proper self-care practices to promote timely recovery.
