Introduction
The symptoms of rhinitis and sinusitis differ. Rhinitis symptoms include nasal congestion, rhinorrhea, and sneezing. Sinusitis symptoms are typically more severe; nasal congestion is often bilateral or persistent and tends to be more pronounced than that seen in rhinitis. In rhinitis, nasal discharge may be clear and watery or white and viscous, whereas in sinusitis, the nasal discharge is purulent and yellow.

Rhinitis and sinusitis—many people likely assume these two terms refer to the same condition, differing only in nomenclature. In reality, this is not the case; rhinitis and sinusitis differ significantly from one another. To effectively treat either condition, it is essential to understand these distinctions. So, what are the key differences between rhinitis and sinusitis?

What Are the Differences Between Rhinitis and Sinusitis?

The symptoms of rhinitis and sinusitis differ. Nasal congestion in sinusitis tends to be more severe than in rhinitis. Rhinitis typically presents with clear, watery, or white, viscous nasal discharge, whereas sinusitis produces purulent, yellowish nasal discharge—indicative of a bacterial infection within the sinuses. Sinusitis is generally more severe because obstruction of the paranasal sinuses leads to accumulation of secretions and pus, resulting in intense headaches that are markedly more severe and longer-lasting.

Both rhinitis and sinusitis can cause some degree of olfactory impairment (reduced sense of smell), but sinusitis typically leads to more pronounced and persistent hyposmia or anosmia. If sinusitis remains inadequately treated, olfactory dysfunction may become irreversible. Therefore, timely and effective management of both rhinitis and sinusitis is crucial to reverse associated pathological changes and achieve full clinical recovery.
