Introduction
When epistaxis (nosebleed) occurs, the following measures can be used to control bleeding: First, apply cold compresses to the forehead. Some patients experience nosebleeds due to nasal trauma, while others have underlying systemic causes. In cases of sudden epistaxis, lie down and gently pinch the soft part of the nose with a cotton swab or clean gauze while applying cold compresses to the forehead—this often stops the bleeding. Cold application induces vasoconstriction, thereby helping to halt nasal hemorrhage.

Many people are unsure what to do when experiencing a nosebleed—or how to stop it quickly. So, how can one effectively stop a nosebleed?

How to Stop a Nosebleed

When a nosebleed occurs, the following methods may be used to control bleeding. First, apply cold compresses to the forehead. Some nosebleeds result from nasal trauma (e.g., impact), while others stem from underlying systemic causes. If a nosebleed occurs suddenly, lie down and gently pinch the soft part of the nose with a cotton swab or clean tissue, while simultaneously applying a cold compress to the forehead. This helps constrict blood vessels and halt bleeding.

Second, apply direct pressure locally. Use your index finger and thumb to firmly press the soft, front portion of the affected nostril for approximately five minutes. If bleeding persists beyond 10 minutes despite sustained pressure, an underlying medical condition may be present, warranting prompt evaluation by a healthcare professional. Another technique involves interlocking the middle fingers of both hands. During a nosebleed, try pressing the middle fingers together firmly (like a “locking” gesture), then rinse the nasal cavity gently with cool water. For recurrent nosebleeds, regularly massaging the sides of the nose with the middle fingers may help alleviate symptoms.

Lastly, press the bleeding nostril against the nasal bridge. This is a commonly used and simple method: gently press the affected nostril against the nasal bridge until the bleeding stops and the blood clots. After bleeding has ceased, avoid disturbing any clotted blood inside the nasal cavity, as this may trigger re-bleeding. We hope this information proves helpful!
