Introduction
After a baby develops heat rash, calamine lotion can be applied topically. Calamine has drying, astringent, and antipruritic effects, making it highly effective for treating infantile prickly heat. Moreover, it is generally well tolerated with virtually no side effects. Alternatively, menthol- or camphor-containing calamine lotions may also be used topically. For oral medication, ketotifen may be administered to relieve itching in some infants.

Heat rash (miliaria) commonly occurs during hot weather when sweat cannot evaporate promptly from the skin, leading to narrowing or blockage of the sweat ducts. So, what should parents do if their baby develops heat rash?

What to Do When Your Baby Develops Heat Rash

Once heat rash appears, topical application of calamine lotion is recommended. Calamine has drying, astringent, and antipruritic properties and is highly effective in relieving prickly heat in infants. It is generally well tolerated with minimal side effects. Alternatively, menthol-containing calamine lotion or talcum powder may also be used topically. For oral treatment, antihistamines such as ketotifen or chlorpheniramine—along with vitamin C—may be administered if the infant experiences significant itching. After onset of heat rash, ensure the room remains well-ventilated and dry, and dress the baby in loose-fitting clothing.

During episodes of heat rash, avoid feeding the baby spicy or irritating foods. Instead, emphasize cooling, heat-clearing foods—for example, offering chrysanthemum tea, bitter melon, chicory, or dandelion greens. Additionally, increase intake of vitamin C–rich foods such as potatoes, kiwifruit, and passion fruit to support rapid skin recovery. Limit snacks—especially sweets—and prioritize high-protein, nutrient-dense foods to bolster overall nutrition.

Dietary adjustments can further aid management—for instance, incorporating heat-clearing and dampness-resolving foods such as watermelon and cucumber. We hope this information proves helpful.
