What causes tonsillitis?
Tonsillitis is a common condition. Inflammation of the tonsils not only affects eating but also impairs speech, causing throat pain during talking. So, what causes tonsillitis?
Causes of Tonsillitis
Tonsillitis is primarily caused by infection—either bacterial or viral. Common predisposing factors include chronic fatigue, excessive consumption of spicy foods, heavy smoking and alcohol use, and the common cold. For mild cases, oral medications are typically sufficient; amoxicillin and antiviral oral solutions may be used for symptomatic treatment. However, if obvious symptoms such as purulent tonsillar exudate or high fever are present, intravenous fluid therapy is recommended. If clinical response remains inadequate, corticosteroids may be added at the clinician’s discretion. During an episode of tonsillitis, patients should follow a light diet, drink plenty of fluids, and ensure adequate rest. Antipyretics are advised if body temperature exceeds 38.5°C.

To prevent tonsillitis and other related complications, patients must cultivate healthy lifestyle habits. Daily routines should be regular; avoid overworking and staying up late. In daily life, develop the habit of drinking ample water and maintain good oral hygiene—brush teeth after breakfast and dinner, and rinse the mouth thoroughly with water to prevent food residue from lingering and triggering oral inflammation.

Patients are generally advised to increase fluid intake and consume more fruits and vegetables, which helps enhance the tonsils’ resistance to infection. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
