Introduction
The ears may occasionally experience itching, one possible cause of which is otomycosis (fungal external otitis). A primary cause of otomycosis is infection of the external auditory canal by unhygienic fungi. For instance, some individuals routinely visit foot spas or other establishments to have their ears cleaned for a fee. Typically, the instruments used for ear cleaning are not adequately sterilized. If otomycosis becomes severe, it can lead to troublesome complications.

Some individuals experience unexplained itching inside the ear, which—when severe—can even impair normal hearing. What causes this ear itching?

What Causes Itching Inside the Ear?

Occasional ear itching may be due to otomycosis (fungal infection of the external ear canal). One primary cause of otomycosis is contamination of the external auditory canal by pathogenic fungi. For example, some people regularly visit foot spas or other establishments to have their ears cleaned—a practice that often involves unsterilized instruments. These tools are frequently not adequately disinfected. Consequently, many patients report that their ear itching worsens rather than improves after such cleaning procedures—likely due to cross-contamination, as fungal spores present on the instruments infect the ear canal.

In such cases, a physician’s evaluation is essential, followed by appropriate ear canal cleaning and antifungal treatment. While ear itching is common, it should not be ignored. Severe otomycosis can lead to significant complications. Mild, transient ear itching occurs frequently and may result from minor external stimuli; in these instances, gentle rubbing or careful ear cleaning may suffice.

However, persistent or recurrent ear itching—especially when associated with underlying medical conditions or other systemic factors—warrants attention. Management may include professional ear irrigation, topical or systemic antifungal medications, and adopting healthy ear-care habits. In some cases, excessive cerumen (earwax) accumulation may trigger itching. We hope this information proves helpful!
